I'm such a sap
So the past few weeks I've been listening to the new 95.7, Wolf-FM radio station. When it came online, replacing my old-time favorite MaxFM, I was quite POed - I really loved MaxFM, used to listen to it pretty much all the time driving, and I drive A LOT. And suddenly one day they switch it out on me? and for what? a country music station of all things?
Jerks!
Well, anyway, that's what I thought initially. I gotta say I wasn't well versed in country at all, so my opinion was certainly not well-founded.
Anyway, more out of boredom than anything else I ended up tuning in to this Wolf thing ever so often, and slowly I grew to appreciate the music. I have to hand it to them - the 10,000 (now 15,000) songs in a row with no commercials launch promotion was a stroke of brilliance; it was the only reason I ended up listening to the station despite my initial reaction, basically because my "backup during commercials" stations - 98.1 and 96.5 - both tend to do their commercial spots at the same time. In other words, I had nowhere else to go.
So I suddenly became "aware" of country, and damn, it's good music. I'm really enjoying a lot of it, even if I have no idea who the singers are. I think the thing that appeals to me most is the clarity; there is just no "what the F were they talking about?!" moments in country. It's really direct and honest and while it can get all mushy sometimes, it has a truly genuine feel to it. There is this lady - I have no idea who she is - who sings this song about driving down the freeway and crashing her car and frantically looking to make sure her child was not hurt and realizing her life was a mess... and you know, even though the song has all these religious undertones, it's just so real that I don't mind. And it goes like that all day.
Anyway, the reason I decided to write this post is another song that appealed to me so much I just can't get it out of my head. I ended up searching up the lyrics and found the song on Youtube, and I wanted to link it here. Yes, of course, it appeals to me because, well, I have a 4-year-old who I love so much and who seems to exhibit the same mindset that the kid in the song does, and... well, what can I say? if there's one thing I learned about country in the past few weeks, it's that this is exactly what it's about, and what its greatest strength is. It's real. Oh, the name of the song is Watching You, and it's by Rodney Atkins.
I still miss MaxFM though. I wish it came back. Then I could switch between the two constantly and just ignore everything else.
