How I became a McDonalds customer
So, just like any other self-respecting, white-collar professional, McDonalds was always taboo for me. I mean, if I did get junk food, my number 1 choice has been (and still is) Jack-in-the-Box, and I admit it, Fast Food Nation did a lot to cement this particular opinion.
But in the past year or so I have become a regular McDonalds customer. Even more shocking is why... but let me tell you my story.
It started when I discovered that McDonalds started serving Minute Maid sugar-free lemonade from their fountains. Awesome! I love the lemonade, and I especially love it from the fountain (tastes better for some reason). It's easily the best (in terms of quality and taste) sugar-free drink served out of fountains anywhere, although the recent addition of sugar-free Sobe at Fresh Choice and Quizno's is just as great. Also, nobody else was doing it. So I started going through the McDonalds drivethru ever so often and buy a large sugar-free lemonade - usually on tuesday mornings before a particular regular client engagement.
As an aside, will McDonalds PLEASE instruct their folks in the stores not to even THINK about adding sugar to the lemonade? that is so annoying when it happens. I can easily catch it because of the altered taste, but I cannot understand how this can be done without asking me. I mean, I'm diabetic, and this will screw my blood sugars pretty significantly; does McDonalds really want me to sue them over this? I will admit that the practice is not widespread, but if you're buying your stuff in certain lower socioeconomic areas, be careful.
Back to the story. So I started buying the lemonade there. They got me in the door, if you will. Well, one day I drove through and also wanted a jolt of coffee, so I got a small coffee in addition to my lemonade. Imagine my shock when I discovered that the coffee served at MickyD's is actually rather decent - heck, it's good. Certainly better than the absolute tripe that gets sold everyday in the millions at Starbucks (where I won't set foot normally because the quality of their coffee is terrible). It's the only chain coffee I've found that I can stand to drink black, and that's saying something.
So now they got me hooked on this, too. Recently I even ordered one of their breakfast items (a sausage McMuffin I think) and found it to be pretty yummy, so it appears the conversion is complete, although admittedly I go there generally for the lemonade and coffee. But yes, I am now a regular McDonalds customer.
But here is the real kicker:
When you think about it, I became a McDonalds customer because of their product QUALITY.
Try that on for size.
